DAY-GLO ORANGE WITH SPECKS OF GREEN?

Over the weekend I finished my article for the April edition of South Jersey Mom magazine. With April 22nd being Earth Day, my topic was how we can all try to be a little greener.

Besides the online research that I did, I read two interesting books from the library: 365 Ways To Live Green by Diane Gow McDilda and The Better World Handbook by Ellis Jones, Ross Haenfler and Brett Johnson.

Funny thing about my research, besides frightening educating me, it also made me more aware on a personal front. Like a lot of other households, we are recycling and conserving household energy where we can. I started to think of other easy changes I could make that would help the environment. I took a coffee mug and a water glass to work, (and made hubby take them too)thereby saving 1200 disposable cups from the trash in the upcoming year. I switched to reusable plastic sandwich and snack containers for school and work lunches instead of disposable zip baggies. That could be 600 fewer plastic bags in the trash this year. The reusable containers are dishwasher safe, so it’s no biggie making the change. My little guy sang the praises of the sandwich container because yesterday when his friend fell on my little guy’s backpack, his sandwich didn’t end up all smooshed - “Like it usually does.”

I’ve noticed a small switch in my thinking too:

Before I print something out, I find myself hesitating and considering whether I really need a hard copy.

Do I really need to buy that?

Yeah, it’s more convenient but …

And while I’m a far cry from spinach-green, I am hoping to deepen my family’s hue.

Hooray for you! I must see about more reusable containers. Particularly in light of S's testimonial on smoosh-resistance.
