SEIZE THE IRONY

My talented artist friend, Charles Kalick, told me he didn’t get any painting done the night before because he hadn’t felt creative. Wouldn’t it be great if creativity and inspiration were faucets we could turn on at will?

In her book Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg compares writing to running. “Some days you don’t want to run and you resist every step of the three miles, but you do it anyway. You practice whether you want to or not. You don’t wait around for inspiration and a deep desire to run. It’ll never happen, especially if you are out of shape and have been avoiding it. But if you run regularly, you train your mind to cut through or ignore your resistance. You just do it. And in the middle of the run, you love it. When you come to the end, you never want to stop. And you stop, hungry for the next time.”

If I waited until I was in the mood to do the laundry, my kids would go to school naked. So I “just do it.” And even though doing laundry was not what I felt like doing, I’m always glad I got it done.

For me, writing works the same way. When I sit down to write, even when I’m not in the mood, creativity often joins me. I “just do it.” I make creativity come to me.

So, whether you are feeling creative or not, put your derriere in the chair. For artists like Charles, put your ass in front of your canvass. “Just do it.” Get creative.

You can sit and wait for the butterfly of inspiration to land on your shoulder, or you can go club it over the head and haul it home. ;-)

I'm glad I "just did it," even though it only netted me one line today. But I got a boatload of prep work done for tomorrow's school visit. And my new gnome is very encouraging!
