LIBRARY-LOVING CHALLENGE

pretty pink flowers

TRAVELING LIBRARY

Bezuidenhout Valley, the suburb I lived in as a child, did not have a library. Every two weeks, I’d sprint home from school, change out of my uniform, put on my tackies (sneakers), run the four blocks to the corner of First Avenue and Second Street (yes, those really are the street names) and wait anxiously for the traveling library.

As I climbed the steps up into the bus, I’d savor the tantalizing aroma of books and petrol fumes. (Weird, I know, but I’ve always loved the smell of petrol.) We were allowed to check out three books and oh the decisions that had to be made. Should I take three Willard Price books, or Enid Blyton’s Famous Five or Secret Seven, or should I take Nancy Drew mysteries? Or should I risk one of my choices on something new?

At that time of my life, being new to the neighborhood, books were my only friends. I don’t know what I would have done without them. I flew through my three book allowance and the fortnight would crawl by and then hip hip hooray, Traveling Library Day!

I’m joining Jennifer Hubbard and other library-lovers for the library-loving blog challenge. For every commenter on this post between now and March 31st, I will donate $2 to the Burlington County bookmobile. http://www.bcls.lib.nj.us/bookmobile

My donation cap is $100.

All you have to do is leave a comment and I’ll send the traveling library a gift. A simple “Hey! I love libraries, too!” as your comment will do, but feel free to be more expressive. Please note that my $2 pledge is “per commenter” not per comment, so I’ll donate $2 for every person leaving a comment not $2 for every comment left by a single person. Spread the word to your friends so they can come and visit my blog, leave a comment and help raise money for a good cause. For a complete list of participating bloggers visit the writerjenn blog at http://writerjenn.livejournal.com. Blog hop and leave comments on all participants’ sites. The more the merrier and the more money to the various libraries.

Without a book I’d be lost. How about you. Your support and comment is much appreciated.

Libraries rock. (Spoken as both an author and the parent of two young kids.) Thanks for doing this!

Libraries
Libraries rock and rule. You are the best for supporting this cause. I have wonderful memories of my library visits as a child and have tried hard to pass that on to my children. You get to sample so much from a library of books/mags, etc. that you may not otherwise have access to. Way to go!

Re: Libraries
Not to mention the potential supply of book club books. Thank you for bringing us together for that.

Fabulous idea. I'm a library junkie and am fortunate enough to live in Southern California surrounded by lots of outstanding libraries.

I love the idea of a Bookmobile! I've only seen them in the movies :). I also loved the smell of petrol as a child. Thanks for doing this, Angela!

I feel better now. I thought I was just me who loved the smell of petrol.

Thanks for participating. It's amazing what we can accomplish when we band together, isn't it?

I love libraries!

My mother has told me how the bookmobile would come around when she was a child, and how much it meant to her. :)

And I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes. Those books are available at my local library too. How I laugh!

Kelly Fineman sent me over! I still use a traveling library--even thought I'm about 6 minutes from the one in town. Our bookmobile shows up at my son's old elementary school, on a little mountain, every two weeks, and I LOVE it. Luckily, I get to take out more than three books. And I read all the Five books when I was young, but maybe I'll have to put one on the list just for old times' sake!

I bought a Famous Five book for my son to read. All this reminiscing reminded me that when I was in high school I used to check out a slew of Barbara Cartland romance novels. I think I'm going to see if I can get a copy of The Unpredictable Bride, just for old times sake. And for a laugh too, I'm sure.
