HERE AND NOW

Once upon a time, there was a wise and talented poet who, endeavoring to share her insight and acumen, posted a manifesto on rhymed couplets. kellyrfineman.blogspot.com/2008/04/rhymed-coupletsa-national-poetry-month_03.html

Not too far away, on a hard-to-find hill surrounded by cherry trees, there lived a budding and enthusiastic, but poetically challenged writer. Enchanted by the wise and talented poet’s tutelage, the writer decided to give rhymed couplets a whirl. She played with words, frolicked with rhyme, ran with rhythm, counted on her fingers (drawing curious glances from fellow passengers on the train) but mostly she had fun. Her sole intention was to see if she could follow the wise and talented poet’s instructions and thereby come up with a half-decent poem.

Low and behold, prompted by the wise and talented poet’s first two lines, the enthusiastic and budding writer ended up crafting ten pairs of rhyming lines with close to consistent meter. Rather pleased with her poetic product, the budding writer showed her results to the wise and talented poet who declared that the budding writer should play some more and develop what she had into something further.

And so, almost magically, after a year or so of playing and puzzling, but basically just having fun, the budding and enthusiastic writer ended up with a rhyming picture book manuscript. After many readings and revisions, tweaking and twisting, cutting and adding, the manuscript was deemed worthy enough to be set free, along with the hopes and dreams of the budding and enthusiastic writer, into the wonderful world of publishing. Whether a fairy god-editor transforms the manuscript into a real book so that the budding writer can live happily ever after, is a story for another day.
