I KNEW THAT!

I have a body of work. Why do I sound so surprised? I’ve been writing for some time and although I’m not yet published in the children’s market, I have written short stories, picture books, poems, easy-readers, an early chapter book, a middle-grade novel and a YA novel. This is cause for celebration because I can look at my work product and feel satisfied that not only is my craft improving, but I am also building quite the portfolio. Progress makes me very happy.

Yesterday I managed to get three submissions out. I’ve been trying for one submission a month but don’t always manage that. I will now state the obvious: in order to get published, I must get my work out there. Easier said than done. I prefer to spend my time creating and revising rather than marketing. I tend to agonize over cover letters and pitches which steal time away from “real writing” time. But when I pop my manuscripts in the mail, I feel exhilarated. It’s kind of like fishing - I usually snag an old boot or an abandoned tire or even a snarl of seaweed - but without baiting my hook and casting my line, I won’t catch a gosh darn thing.

You do indeed have a body of work, and I feel fortunate to have read so much of it - it's just a matter of time until many of your works are available to a much wider readership!
