SQUIRRELED AWAY

You know how they say that you never see baby squirrels?
Well, in the 13 years that I've lived in my house with its half-acre wooded back garden, I have seen squirrels a-plenty but I"ve never seen a baby one. Until yesterday. I was folding laundry on the sofa, gazing out at the back garden when I saw a squirrel coming down a tree trunk carrying something rather large and round and furry in its mouth. Then she dropped her bundle and it unfurled into a tiny squirrel. She wrapped her baby back up again, picked it up in her mouth and scampered across my garden and up another tree. Then she came back, went up the first tree and came back down with another baby. This one wasn't so keen to move nests because it wriggled until it broke free then bolted back up the trunk. Mama wasn't having any of this nonsense. She chased him down, folded him up and picked him up again. She was halfway across the lawn when he got loose again and ran back home. Mama kept up the struggle and finally got him up to the new nest.
I wonder how many little ones she has and how many trips she had to make, all the while taking care not to rouse the attention of a circling hawk or a curious golden retriever who was taking a snooze on the patio, totally oblivious to moving day in the Squirrel household.

So baby squirrels do exist!

Maybe it's unusual for them to change nests--and the reason we don't see them is that they normally spend their babyhood in a nest up on a high tree limb.

I think that must be it.

I'm glad Bella didn't bother the mama - that must've been something interesting to watch.

And yes. I'm trying to catch up a wee bit on blog reading. Finally. But truly, I need a nap.

Better late than never, as they say. Naps are good for the soul. I just might treat myself to one today.
