HUNGRY BIRDS

Here's my birdfeeder. Yesterday it was full of seed. Even the peppery hot stuff recommended to discourage squirrels.

Today it's full of . . . that's right, a cheeky chipmunk.

The little monster was convinced that if he stayed completely still, I could not see him. He even posed for a couple of photos.

By this time, he'd eaten so much that he couldn't squeeze himself back out of that tiny hole. When I lifted the feeder off the hook so that I could unscrew the top and release him, he had a panic attack and shoved his fat little body through the hole with a rather loud and somewhat derogatory sounding squeak.

Ha! Reminds me of J. D. Salinger's famous bananafish in "A Perfect Day For Bananafish," who ate so much he couldn't get out of the hole.

It was certainly A Perfect Day for Chipmunk - all you can eat buffet, photo shoot and death-defying leap and squeak to freedom.

We hang our feeder out a window on the second floor. The squirrels still try to get at it. One amused us by trying to climb up a glass door. A couple of others have leaped at it from tree branches.

They are the acrobats of the backyard. They are very amusing but make such pigs of themselves with the bird seed. If they'd only learn to share!
