PUT THE CHICKEN IN

When I was twelve, my mom would call from work at 3:30 p.m. and ask me to put the chicken in the oven. I would preheat the oven, wash the chicken and pat it dry, then season it with salt, pepper, garlic and paprika. When the oven peeped that it was ready, I would pop the chicken inside. I’d do the same for roast beef, pork and lamb (different seasonings). When my mom arrived home from work in the evening, she’d cook the vegetables and then we’d all sit down for dinner.

Yesterday, I was at work while my mom was at home. She’s visiting from England for five weeks. I called and asked her to put the chicken in the oven for me. I smiled at how our roles had switched, but then I it made me a little sad. How time has flown by. Now I’m a mom. I also started thinking that more role reversal could be in our future – playing mom to my mom.
