READING LIKE A WRITER

Excerpts from Poets & Writers article, You Are What You Read, by Joshua Bodwell.

Reading is everything to me as a writer,” says Doerr. “It’s where I go when I get discouraged, when I forget why it is I wanted to be a writer in the first place. And books are where I go when I want to be reminded of the mystery and magic of our shared language.”

-                      Anthony Doerr, author of Four Seasons in Rome.

“If I didn’t read, I wouldn’t be able to write a word,” says Van Booy bluntly. “Reading is the food that fuels my writing.”

-                      Simon Van Booy, author of The Secret Lives of People in Love.

“Words lead to deeds … They prepare the soul, make it ready, and move it to tenderness.”

-                      Saint Teresa

“Similarly, books fortify the mind and prepare it for writing. They fertilize our imagination, make it ready, and move us to our desks, and to the pen and paper that awaits us.”

-                      Joshua Bodwell

So what are you reading and how it is helping you as a writer?

I’m re-reading Stephen King’s Bag of Bones. It’s Halloween-month after all, and Bag of Bones is showing me a thing or two about setting the atmosphere, building tension as well as foreshadowing. SK is really good at creating characters that you know – I’m trying to figure out how he does that.

And here's a peek at autumn tiptoeing into my back garden:
