THINKING BACK BEFORE I THINK AHEAD

When I was little, every December 31st, my mom would tell me to look outside for the man who has as many noses on his face as there are days left in the year. I would run outside and sit on our garden wall where I had a good view of the road and look for this man so grotesquely disfigured as to have many noses on his face. Sadly, and amusingly, it took me three or four years to cotton on that I saw this man in every man that passed by that day. Yes, I had known it was New Year’s Eve and that it was December 31st, but for some reason I never put the two together with my mom’s little joke, probably because I was excited about seeing some weirdo with three or four noses walking by. I told the same riddle to my sons when they were little. Both are clearly smarter or wiser than I was at their age because they worked it out the first time. It still makes me smile to think of little Angela sitting on that wall staring at each face that passed by.

All the best for 2013 – I wish you a happy and healthy new year.
