DEVELOPING YOUR WRITING STYLE

****

From Writer's Digest interview with Dave Barry.

When asked what was the key to developing his writing style, Dave Barry said, "The key for me in terms of sanity was not feeling huge pressure to make it as a writer." He wrote whatever he felt like writing because he didn't feel pressure to be commercially successful. He said he probably would have made mistakes if he had been trying too hard.

I don't know about you, but focusing on the finish line can be counterproductive for me. I crank more out and have more fun doing it when I write everyday without worrying too much about getting published.

I do like to keep my reader in mind while I write, but when I worry about whether my story is publishable I end up overthinking it. That gets my internal editor going and that's not good. I have to remind myself to just write. So what if this isn't the one that gets published. The next one will. Or the next one.
