VOICE

***

What is voice?

From Donald Maass’s Writing The Breakout Novel:

“. . . not only a unique way of putting words together, but a unique sensibility, a distinctive way of looking at the world, an outlook that enriches an author’s oeuvre.”
This is where I admit that I had to look up the word “oeuvre” to find out that it basically means an artist’s body of work.
Maass recommends setting your words, characters and, most of all, your heart free in order to set your voice free. “Your voice is your self in the story.”

It's the way you can tell, after a while, that Beethoven wrote that music even though you've never heard it before, or that Dali painted that painting even though you've never seen it. If you're familiar with their other work, it just "sounds like him" or "looks like his work." (I guess Maass expresses this more clearly than I do!)

I think you expressed it just fine. I guess that after a while, no matter what you are writing, some of yourself shines through, and that's the common thread in all your work.
