DESIRE AND YEARNING AND CONFLICT! OH MY!

*****

From September Writer’s Digest: David Corbett’s excellent article on Finding Your Story’s Engine.

“One might even define story as the awakening of the character to his deeper yearning through the conflict created by pursuing some outer object of desire.”

Corbett’s article proposes that it is desire rather than conflict that creates movement in a story. The protagonist’s desires create movement and his yearning provides meaning. Without these conflict is only “sound and fury.”
