PICTURE BOOK PICK OF THE WEEK

YARD SALE
by Eve Bunting, illustrated by Lauren Castillo; Candlewick Press 2015

Callie’s family is moving to a tiny apartment so they are having a yard sale. Almost everything they own is out on their front lawn including Callie’s bed and her bike. Callie knows that it has something to do with money,
but it’s still hard to see people buy and take away your stuff. It’s hard to leave your friends behind.

Sara stares at me. “I could ask my parents if you could stay with us.”
I give her a hug. She smells of Froot Loops. “My parents would be lonely,” I say.
“Maybe we could give them Petey instead,” she offers.
“No offense,” I say, “but I’d miss my mom and dad.”

Later, when they go inside their almost empty house, Callie is okay – they don’t really need the things they’ve sold. “A home isn’t about what you have but who you hold close.”
