DAY 2: POETRY CHALLENGE

On Bundling, by Anonymous

Since in bed, a maid
May bundle and be chaste.
It doth no good to burn up wood.
It is a needless waste.

As a little kid, Anonymous was one of my favorite poets. Really.

Funny that this poem, which is amusing to me, can be found in the "World of Love and Romance" section of the Random House Treasury of Best-Loved Poems. This poem is new to me. How about you?

As much as we love our servants, let's not be wasting wood by keeping them warm. Is that the gist?

I like it - it's short and sweet.

I've never heard that poem before, however, as soon as I read it I took "maid" to mean maiden and not a servant. It seems he/she shortened maiden to main to fit the tempo better.

Just my thoughts on it.

Good point - maybe he's keeping her warm. Although the bundling and chaste seems to contradict that thought.

bundling was the once common practice of sleeping -- fully clothed -- with one's betrothed, if I remember correctly. The poem suggests the heat that such a sleeping arrangement often generated. It also generated many a hasty marriage.

Thanks for the info - I've learned something new. It's making more sense now.

I learned it from this book: "Good Wives: Image and Reality in the Lives of Women in Northern New England" It is a very interesting read about the power held and witheld from women in the earliest part of this country's colonization. I admit to forgetting most of the details, but "bundling" stuck with me.

That Anonymous is so prolific!
Reminds me of this show that's always on TV: "To Be Announced."
;-)

Bundling sounds as much fun as hanging a box of Godiva chocolates in front of your face, with a big sign on it: DON'T TOUCH YET.

My older son sometimes gets Ms. "To be Determined" as the teacher on his end of year report card. Or is it Mr.?
