30 MINUTES, 600 PLUS WORDS

When:   Monday 5:55 am

Where:  Train to Philly (not the Express)

What:  Character back story

Why:  I don't know him well enough and it's holding up my WIP

How:  With pen, notebook and some thought

As I mentioned in a previous post, my current WIP is plodding along at a slow (and laborious) pace. Last week, I reached a point in the middle of a scene, where I didn't know how my character was going to react. I realized I needed to spend some time with him and work on his as well as some of the other characters' back stories. You know, the stuff that's already happened to them, the stuff that isn't going to be in the final draft but is necessary for the story to unfold.

This seemed like ideal train writing to me. On my way to work, I could spend some time thinking about things. So, I asked myself the questions, like: What kind of person is he? Where is he from? How did he end up here?

Well, the little man inside my head, (a.k.a. muse to some) must have been itching to answer these questions all along, because by the time the train pulled into 16th & Locust Street station, I had scribbled some 600 words (most of them legible), two scenes and answered all of my questions. Plus, the little man managed to connect the character's back story and the scenes with the overall plot of my story. He also answered questions I hadn't even asked.

Isn't it cool when that kind of thing happens?

I'm also feeling pleased as punch at my success (with some help from my writing buddy) at adding a new userpic. I know, it's sad how technically backwards I am. Hey, slow and steady wins the race! I'll get there.

Said writing buddy also treated me with gifts (other than her encouragement and company). I'm looking forward to the next round of revisions on my middle-grade horror now that I have a visual stimulant and my current WIP can only flourish with the photos taken during our walk in the woods.
Thank you muchly.

Gnomes!
So cute.

Well done, you. The little man did a good job, too.
