KEEPER

Kathi Appelt’s Keeper is a truly wonderful experience. Right from the first page we’re tugged into the mythically magical world of talking crabs, storm-predicting, seagull-loving dogs, a wise one-eyed cat and blue moon gumbo. With a light and lyrical hand, Appelt spins an enchanting story of loss, love, luck and life, around a handful of residents in a tiny seaside town where family has less to do with blood connections and more to do with love and companionship.

Ten-year-old Keeper is in a boat-load of trouble thanks to the stupid crabs (meant for celebratory gumbo) that talked her into setting them free. She is counting on the blue moon and the tides and Yemaya, queen of the merfolk, to guide her small boat out into the ocean to the sandbar where the merfolk gather so that she can ask her mermaid mother how to set things right. Keeper’s faith and determination, peppered with omen’s, charms and gifts to the goddess of the deep, shows that while on the road to one solution it’s possible to discover that the answers to our troubles were close by all the time.
