NOBODY CARES

Nobody cares about or likes my main character except me. Turns out the Melanie I see in my head is not the Melanie I show on paper – at least not for the first 3 chapters.

So how to fix that?

Enter Donald Maass’s Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook.

Armed with DM’s workbook, highlighters, notebook and different colored pens, I set to work. I read the section on character development (From Protagonist to Hero, Multidimensional Characters, Personal Stakes, etc.), I did the exercises and I applied the techniques using highlighters and pens.  Oh, how pretty (and messed up) my pages looked when I was done.

And then I set to fixing them.

After my changes, Melanie is looking and sounding more like the girl I know (and love). I’m going to give her the week off and then I’m going to rinse and repeat chapters 1-3. Once I’m satisfied with the first 3 chapters, I plan to spend the rest of the summer seeing how my whole manuscript stands up to the rest of DM’s workbook.

I’m having fun revising – what a win!

Yeah, it's not often I say that I'm having fun revising. DM's workbook has given me the direction (and kick in the pants) I need. I really feel like I can do this. And I'm not stressed about it, either.

I hope it's nice and cool in your cave (and no bats!) Thanks for the wave, cold drinks and happy thoughts. It's nice to know I'm not alone.
