JACK GANTOS GIVES US THE KEY

****

Along with a bazillion other school supplies, my son needed an Independent Reader for 6th grade. All the brilliant books that I recommended were met with a scornful, “Nah,” so off we trotted to Barnes and Noble where I let him take his pick. Maze Runner by James Dashner was his first choice – not surprising as we’d recently seen the movie trailer and it the book was prominently displayed in the store. I urged him to pick a second book as he goes through books at lightning speed. He took a little time perusing the shelves before selecting Jack Gantos’ Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key. Then he decided he’d read this one first and leave the Maze Runner till later.

After the first day of school, I asked him how the Joey Pigza book was going. He said he was almost finished. “You have to read it, Mom. It’s funny, but it’s sad. And please order the next Joey Pigza book.”
Now that I’ve read it, I’m adding Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key to my Brilliant Books list. I have my book club meeting this Friday. I plan to recommend it to all my book club friends – yeah their kids can read it, but I want them to read it, too. It’s powerful and eye-opening. And you can’t help but love Joey Pigza.

With my writer friends, I’d like to share these Go Fish Questions for the Author from the book’s bonus material:

Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

JG: In high school, it suddenly occurred to me that most adults I knew were fairly miserable because they were stuck in jobs they did not like. So I made a list of things I liked to do and reading and writing and bookish things were at the top of my list. I liked books. Writing was a constant challenge. I knew I would never be bored with it.

Q: What’s the best advice you have ever received about writing?

JG: Read good books. Keep a journal. Write every day. Trust yourself. Take advantage of every good thought. Laziness will kill your dreams with a self-inflicted wound.

Those speak to me. How about you?
