DAFFODILS FOR OBAMA

I count myself fortunate to have been residing in two countries at the time of historic and momentous elections. In 1994, I took part in South Africa's first democratic elections and was present when that country's first black president took office. Now, I am living in America and can celebrate the election of our first African-American president here.

It seemed fitting that as I turned the page in my Random House Treasury of Best-Loved Poems in order to read today's poem, that the poem was my favorite one, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth. I'm particularly fond of the lines:

              "I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
               What wealth the show to me had brought:

               For oft, when on my couch I lie
               In vacant or in pensive mood,
               They flash upon that inward eye
               Which is the bliss of solitude;
               And then my heart with pleasure fills,
               And dances with the daffodils."

My heart is certainly dancing today.
